The 2013 TechEdge Celebration is the tenth year that SARTA has hosted the Sacramento region’s largest celebration of its technology sector. TechEdge features thought-provoking and inspirational keynote speakers, motivating stories of accomplishment from regional technology leaders including Baker and a comprehensive map of the region’s entire tech sector.

“I’m looking forward to sharing our success story to show how a company like Eyefinity can succeed in Sacramento with customers across the United States,” said Baker. “The Sacramento market can be an exciting and invigorating locale to build companies. We must be smart in the areas where executives need to work together.”

As part of the TechEdge speaker lineup, Pandora Radio cofounder and chief strategy officer, Tim Westergren, will share stories of the company’s growth. Other regional technology leaders scheduled to speak include Jeff Gray, CEO of Glue Networks and Lisa Klinkhammer, president and CEO of SargesList, Inc.

“We need to attract talent, young talent, to this market,” said Baker. “We need to communicate the great story that we have to share one about work/life balance and how the [Sacramento] region is a great place to live and work.  If we don’t tell the story, someone else will for their region.  I don’t know about you, but I really don’t like to lose.”

Succeeding in Sacramento: The Eyefinity Story

Succeeding in Sacramento

Eyefinity president, Steve Baker, tells a local business group about Eyefinity’s culture and success.

Eyefinity president, Steve Baker proudly shared the story of Eyefinity during the recent MedStart Connect Mixer hosted by the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA) in Eyefinity’s hometown of Sacramento. Ranging from start-up medical device companies and venture capitalists to biomedical researchers, clinicians and regulatory affairs experts, MedStart, a SARTA initiative, connects a wide variety of medical technology and biomedical resources in the Sacramento region. SARTA is a not-for-profit organization that was founded in 2001 to accelerate the growth and development of technology companies and the technology sector in the Sacramento region.

SARTA’s vision is to develop the Sacramento region into a nationally recognized center of technology and technological innovation, as evidenced by a significant number of technology companies growing, developing, and prospering in the region.

During September’s mixer, several medical technology companies from throughout the Sacramento region shared personal stories with attendees about medical technology innovations, start-up challenges, and milestones achieved. Eyefinity was specially recognized for “succeeding in Sacramento,” and during his presentation, Steve shared a light-hearted glimpse into who Eyefinity is and Eyefinity’s part in helping to fulfill a vision of enabling millions of people see better through innovation. Steve also talked about the company’s growth in 2012 and the hard-working, fun-loving nature of Team Eyefinity.

Steve Baker, President of Eyefinity

You know the guy that buys a raffle ticket at the school fundraiser… but never wins? Yeah, I’m that guy. So you can imagine my elation when I heard that we had been chosen by the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA) as July 2012’s ‘featured success.’ To some of you, that may not seem like such a big deal, but to me, it’s pretty cool. And what makes it pretty cool is that this isn’t so much a prize but rather a reward for hard work earned.

For those of you who aren’t familar with us, Eyefinity has been in the Sacramento region since 2000. Born in the dot-com craze, our parent company (VSP) started Eyefinity to ensure that eyecare professionals have a business partner to help them compete in the new information age. We quickly grew to be the dominant leader in our industry, providing web and desktop solutions that help manage optometric businesses. We established the leadership position through an unwavering passion for the market we serve and a commitment to deliver simple but powerful technology solutions that make a difference in the lives of our customers.

Healthcare is moving at an incredible velocity, fueled by innovations in technology as well as a growing consumer interest in wellness. Eyefinity is tracking on that curve, growing into new areas such as cloud computing, mobile applications, online retailing and Health Information Exchanges. We see a great future in supply chain management, patient portal technology, and international business opportunities to name just a few of the areas that call to us. These areas need a company like Eyefinity, which remains focused, agile, and innovative to meet the changing needs of the market.

To quote a great song from the 80’s: The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades. And it’s for that reason that we need to continue to hire the best and brightest talent. We have no boundaries on the future possibilities for Eyefinity. So for us, we are constantly on the lookout for great talent to push us to a higher elevation. Sacramento needs a vibrant tech community to sustain ourselves as well as many other companies in this region that desire to excel in their respective market.

Do you see the same need or do you have a different view? Can you articulate a successful vision for the Sacramento region that doesn’t involve companies like Eyefinity? Or do you see that it’s about dang time that we stepped up to the plate and increased our standing in the tech community, moving out of the shadow of our big brother in the Silicon Valley? I would love to hear your thoughts! Please drop me a line at steve.baker@eyefinity.com.
