ePrescribing is Here to Stay—The Latest States to Make the Switch

In 2003 electronic prescribing (ePrescribing) was introduced as a cheaper, more convenient, and safer way to prescribe medication. It has become an integral part in providing quality care and now several states including Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, and New York have implemented ePrescribe mandates. California and Michigan are next.

So, what does this mean for my practice?  

Starting October 1, 2021, for Michigan and January 1, 2022, for California, optometrists, ophthalmologists and other prescribers will be required to send all medication prescriptions electronically. If your practice is currently using paper medication prescriptions, they will no longer meet the Michigan and California Pharmacy Law requirements. 

As the eye care industry continues to evolve, we are seeing a shift from traditional paper workflows to smart technology and automation. Whether you are practicing in a state immediately affected by this new mandate or not, we recommend you check your state guidelines. You may need to adjust your office procedures or secure new software in order to comply with these new ePrescribe mandates soon.

We can all agree 2020 evolved much differently than we imagined back in January. Despite the impacts of COVID-19, an economic slowdown, and the civil unrest that swept across our country, there were some positives born of thinking differently to respond to the needs of our customers, partners, and employees. Specifically, I have truly appreciated the rapid advancement of collaboration technology and the agility of our team as we adapted to a new way of working.

I’ve also been especially inspired by how eye care providers, like you, have weathered the changes and disruptions. Here at Eyefinity, we were lucky enough to witness innovative ways practices made use of the downtime—from minimally staffing their practice so they could continue to help patients and keep them from emergency rooms, to adding telehealth into their clinical plan. Many of our customers also took the time to attend CE courses through the VSP Global Premier Program and Premier Academy 360. I’m sure you must be very proud of how your team has managed through the ups and downs, while continuing to support and care for the community you serve.

I too applaud the efforts of those with whom I work. In addition to keeping our platforms moving along, we launched call-back technology to our customer care apparatus to ease hold-times and we drove a 30-day onboarding cycle for customers who were eager to expedite their training. We also launched our first virtual Education Conference.

As 2020 comes to a close and we reflect on this year, we want to take a moment to recognize the critical work you’re doing to provide the best care possible for your patients. I’m proud that EHNAC has awarded Eyefinity with another two years of full accreditation with the Healthcare Network Accreditation Program (HNAP). This achievement aligns with Eyefinity’s ongoing commitment to cyber security and ensuring customers trust in our ability to manage and protect personal health information and reliably process HIPAA transactions.

EHNAC conducted a comprehensive review of Eyefinity’s privacy and security measures, system availability, timeliness, and accuracy concluding all established standards for the industry had been successfully met.
