Shooting Hoops and Improving Eyesight

Today’s article was submitted by guest writer, Courtney McKernan. Courtney is a member of Eyefinity’s Eyeconic team.

Kids enjoyed basketball drills and learning about sportsmanship.

Basketballs? Check.

Hundreds of first through fifth graders? Check.

Charitable eye exams and glasses provided to kids in need? Check.

NBA star Tyreke Evans?! Check plus!!

On Thursday, June 14th, some Eyefinity employees volunteered their time at a basketball camp hosted by Sacramento Kings player Tyreke Evans and VSP Vision Care at the Dr. Ephraim Williams Family Life Center in Sacramento.

For the second year in a row, local underprivileged youth had the chance to go through a day of basketball drills, learn lessons on sportsmanship and being team players, and ask their favorite local NBA stars some questions.

In addition to playing b-ball, the kids received charitable comprehensive eye exams  and glasses from volunteer VSP doctors aboard the VSP mobile eye clinic.

In addition, some local VSP optometrists, Tiffany Lu, OD, and Paul Kim, OD, generously volunteered their time to provide free eye exams and glasses onboard a VSP mobile eye clinic during the camp. It was a great way to spread the important message that you have to see your best in order to play your best—whether that’s playing on the court or stepping up your academic game in the classroom.

My favorite moment of the day was during the Q&A session, when a young boy, no more than nine years old, asked Tyreke, “Do you live in a mansion?” To which Tyreke chuckled and replied, “I wouldn’t say it’s a mansion, but it’s a nice house.” Tyreke was very polite, down-to-earth, and had an almost shy demeanor, which was a breath of fresh air to witness as it was obvious that the kids looked up to him.

VSP Vision Care and Eyefinity employees volunteered to help make the event a success.

We participated in this event because doing so supports three of our values—We care, we support our community and environment, and we have fun. All in all, this was a very memorable day and I feel fortunate to work for a great company that practices what it preaches.

On behalf of 6 practices that ordered on eBuy at eyefinity.com this fall, more than 500 students will receive the gift of sight with free eye exams and eyewear from the VSP Sight for Students program. As winners in a recent eBuy campaign, the 6 practices were able to choose a school in their community to receive the Sight for Students gift certificates and a $500 Staples gift card for school supplies.

Winning practices and schools are:

  • Mercedeh Motameni, OD, FAAO –Paul Revere Charter Middle School, Los Angeles, CA

VSP fully funds the Sight for Students program, paying practices to provide the services and dispense the eyewear. The gift certificates are redeemable with VSP providers on the Choice network who carry Altair frames. To join the Choice network, please call the VSP Customer Service Department at 800.615.1883. We’re Stepping Out to Stop Diabetes!

ADA Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes

In partnership with VSP Global, Eyefinity/OfficeMate is taking part in Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes to support the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. It is a disease that has deadly serious consequences, and there is no cure. VSP is committed to supporting the ADA and to raising awareness about the importance of annual eye exams to detect the signs of diabetes and allow for early treatment and management of the disease. Did you know that 90 percent of diabetes-related blindness can be avoided with annual eye exams? For more information about diabetes, please visit our Diabetes Discovery Center.

The Eyefinity/OfficeMate Irvine, CA, team members have join together to walk 3.1 miles at the Step Out Walk in Buena Park, CA, at 8:30am on Saturday, October 9, 2010. The walk is taking place at Knott’s Berry Farm, so there’s a good chance that we’ll see Snoopy on our walk! If you live in Orange County and want to walk with us, we would love to have your company. If you live outside of Orange County, or you cannot participate in the walk, you can support our team with a financial donation on our Eyefinity/OfficeMate – Irvine Team Web page. We are raising funds to help the American Diabetes Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes, and fund critical research for a cure.

If you would like more information about the Eyefinity/OfficeMate Irvine Team and how you can participate in this important event and fundraiser, leave a comment at the end of this blog post.

Please forward this blog post to your friends and family – participation is welcome by all! Together we can stop diabetes. One step at a time.
