One of my favorite quotes of all time is “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” attributed to hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky. I’ve always loved that it speaks to taking chances and not backing down from the unfamiliar.
Though I am nothing of a hockey player, I’ve had opportunities to strengthen my professional relationships on the golf course. Over the years, I’ve come to believe that whoever had the idea of hitting a 1.5-inch ball into a 4.25-inch hole several hundred yards away was certifiably insane. Whether you’re a pro or new to the game, the ball will from time to time land someplace unexpected…and perhaps undesired. As they say, things don’t always go according to plan. But the second we lose focus and let uncertainty paralyze us is the second progress grinds to a halt.
The Optometric industry is a living, breathing organism. That means that things change, all the time. At Eyefinity, we maintain a culture of embracing the unexpected. Need to adjust software based on customer feedback? Sure. Have to hold the release of a service pack so that we can be sure to incorporate insight from the doctors and practice staff we work with? Done. In a way, unexpected outcomes are simply a matter of perspective.
It’s important to remember that life is a lot like driving a 1.5-inch ball into a 4.25-inch hole several hundred yards away. You’re not always going to make the shot. But if we are going to continue moving forward together, we can’t afford to not try. #ForwardTogether.
By the way, after trying my hand at golf, I decided to pursue something a little less mentally fatiguing — the Insanity Workout! I guess we all do what we do…
