One of the areas I have found refreshing as far as time savings and efficiency in my workflow goes, is the adaptive learning feature of Eyefinity EHR. The program “learns” the choices I make most frequently in my exam and offers them up on a list for me to select from, keeping me from having to scroll ad nauseam. The more I use the program, the more efficient it makes me. This is refreshing. Keep up the good work, Eyefinity! You’re making me a better doctor by giving me more time to spend with patients and reducing the time I spend staring at a computer.

Leave the Busy Work to the Machines

I can remember the amount of time it took me at the beginning of the process with my previous EHR to input all of the possible contact lens options. I cannot imagine doing that again. It was hours on end of my time and then hours of time on the part of my staff each time a new product was released. One of my favorite features of Eyefinity EHR is that it pulls all the contact lens options from ABB’s database and requires none of my time doing data entry. The product catalogue is updated as soon as a product is released. This allows me to make certain I never pick a contact lens that isn’t available, saves all of our team’s time, and creates greater efficiency in our practice. While I am sure I will find something I don’t like as much about the new EHR, these features are already making it more than worth my investment of time and money.

Enjoyable EHR?

One of the most impressive pieces of the on-boarding process with Eyefinity EHR is the level of interactive engagement. It is easier to learn when you are able to watch an expert demonstrate the software, test the concepts you learned together, then immediately try them on your own. I have observed all the members of my team as they have gone through the learning process and have been very impressed with how quickly they were able to learn. It is easier to adapt when you actually try it. My staff has found learning Eyefinity EHR enjoyable and a nice distraction from the daily routine. We have set goals for each member of the team, making certain we provide them with the time to accomplish their goals and recap progress together on a weekly basis. There has been no complaining throughout the process because we are all in this together and it is important to all of the team to be successful.

How to Decide When to Get Started With EHR

When to start with EHR

Dr_Jasper_shortAt some point, we have all asked or will ask ourselves, “is there ever a good time to implement a new EHR?” The truthful answer is: it depends. I recommend that new practices start from the beginning with an EHR as the extra features make it a no-brainer. Patients can be taught from the start to engage with the patient portal and create good habits with practice staff.

What if you are an established practice? When should you begin? Plan for two to three months of training and be able to enter 50 charts in the sandbox before you go live. To make this process easier, create time in your day — even just half an hour — to practice and do the same for your staff. Your office manager can help keep your team on track and should try to keep the owner and doctors on track too.

While it’s difficult to put down the phone and stop checking email, leave that one opening in your schedule to give yourself time to learn. I will always have another conference, event, or patient to attend to. So, my strategy is to schedule time for things I intend to accomplish or I will not get them done. Whatever your strategy is, you must commit to it; when you make that commitment, you will find that the “when” is no longer an issue.
